The Palintest 1000 Ammonia Meter is a precision dual range Photometer for measuring Ammonia concentration in water. The ranges available are 0 - 15 mg/ l N and 0 - 50 mg/ l N. The single parameter meter is used in conjunction with the Tubetests Nessler reagent. The system provides a quick and simple but accurate way to monitor ammonia levels.
Ammonia occurs as a breakdown product of nitrogenous material in natural waters. It is also found in domestic effluents and certain industrial waste waters. Ammonia is harmful to fish and other forms of aquatic life, and the ammonia level must be carefully controlled in water used for fish farms and aquariums. Ammonia tests are routinely applied for the monitoring of natural water, sea water, and for pollution control on effluents and waste waters. The reduction of ammonia is an indication of the efficiency of a sewage treatment plant. Treatment plants in the UK will have a Consent to Discharge to receiving water which usually includes a maximum limit for ammonia. This is normally in the range of 10 – 12 mg/ l N.
